Machupichu (2400 m / 7872 ft) is probably the most familiar symbol of the Inca Empire. It is believed that the city It was built by the Sapan Inca Pachacútec, beginning around 1440, and was inhabited until the conquest from Peru in 1532. Archaeological evidence shows that Machupichu was not a conventional city, but a sacred city for the Inca nobility. The site has a large palace and temples dedicated to Inca deities around a courtyard, with other buildings for support staff. It is estimated that between 800 and 1,200 people resided in Machupichu at any given time, and probably only a small fraction of that number lived in the city during the rainy season.
